Developing teaching material that is critical of racism and sensitive to diversity
Language is powerful – narratives and their perspectives effect our imagination. This realization also gives rise to a responsibility for educators to use language sensitively and consciously and to critically reflect on narrative material.
Since August 2022, a commission of the Pädagogische Forschungsstelle has been analyzing our collection of English readers. We regard this work as a building block of educational work at Waldorf schools that is critical of racism and sensitive to diversity. Literature by authors from different cultural and religious backgrounds should enable students to get in touch with inclusive lifestyles, moving away from heteronormative ideas and including queer identities. It is important to us to critically reflect on the history of language in relation to colonial structures and to give space to the voices and perspectives of BIPoC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color).
We are working hard to provide a selection of new material and to retell the stories of some existing works. In this context, we are looking forward to a number of new books to be published within the next one to two years.
